Karl Broberg has horses in 11 races on Wednesday in his bid to become the third trainer to win 500 races in a calendar year in North America. Broberg has starters in six races at Delta Downs and five at Remington Park. Broberg through Monday had won 478 races on the year, which puts him first in trainer wins in North America. The only other trainers to have won more than 500 races in a calendar year are Steve Asmussen and Scott Lake. Broberg is coming off a strong week, having won 12 races from last Wednesday through Saturday. He won five last Wednesday, with three wins at Delta and two at Remington. ◗ The Remington Park Racing Club will be represented in Wednesday night’s fourth race with Take Charge Easy. Richard Eramia has the mount for trainer Federico Villafranco. Also on the card, Dance Kingdom, a son of Ghostzapper and a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Gold Medal Dancer, makes his debut in a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds for Pin Oak Stable and trainer Donnie Von Hemel. ◗ Remington begins an extended raceweek Wednesday night. The track will race through Saturday night then, after being dark Sunday, will put on afternoon cards Monday and Tuesday. ◗ Kentucky Derby-winning trainers Doug O’Neill and John Servis both said they are looking at sending horses into Oaklawn for stakes during the meet, which opens Jan. 25. “We’ll be shipping in and out for stakes,” the Southern California-based O’Neill said. ◗ Jockey Ry Eikleberry entered Monday’s card at Zia nearing 2,000 Thoroughbred wins in North America. He was sitting at 1,990, according to a notice from Equibase.
