Trainer appealing overweight DQ

Bubbi Trap has been disqualified from all purse money after she was found to have carried an incorrect weight in her first-place finish in Tuesday's Rainbow Connection Stakes at Fort Erie.

Jim Day, who trains Bubbi Trap for the Come by Chance Stable of his mother, Edna Arrow, has appealed the ruling by the Fort Erie stewards.

Day had entered Bubbi Trap in the Rainbow Connection with a listed weight of "118?" The question mark indicated a common scenario in which the race office is expected to double-check the weight allowance.

Bubbi Trap indeed should have carried 118 pounds, and the weight was correctly listed on the overnight and in Daily Racing Form. But because of a race office error, the filly's weight was listed in the program at 116 pounds and she raced under that weight.

Bill Brennan, trainer of third-place finisher Guysmarlene, lodged a protest following the race.

"It's pretty cut and dried," said Richard Grubb, a steward at Fort Erie. "The horse carried the incorrect weight."

With Bubbi Trap declared unplaced for all purposes except parimutel wagering, the Rainbow Connection winner, pending the appeal, is Sports Flashy. The winner's share is $75,000.
