Track record for Key's Band in Mt. Cristo Rey

Jeff Taylor|Mar 23, 2009

Key's Band, making his first start for new trainer J.R. Gonzalez Jr. since being claimed for $40,000 late last year, controlled the pace throughout and set a track record in Saturday's Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap at Sunland Park. Chaco Latte chased the winner in vain throughout and settled for second, followed by 6-5 favorite Z. Z. Dome and 121-pound highweight Gulchrunssweet.

Ridden by Jorge Bourdieu, Key's Band ($12.20) covered the 4 1/2 furlongs in 49.43 seconds, easily eclipsing the previous mark of 49.83 set by Gulchrunssweet in 2006. The victory was Key's Band's first in stakes company and fourth in his 13-race career. The 5-year-old Chimes Band gelding has now earned more than $151,000.
