Touchuponastar will put a perfect Delta Downs record on the line Saturday night, when he attempts to win his fifth race at the Vinton, La., track in the $150,000 Louisiana Premier Night Championship. The 1 1/16-mile race for 4-year-olds and up anchors a card featuring six divisional stakes for Louisiana-breds. Free Like a Girl, who is the reigning Louisiana-bred of the year, is entered in the $125,000 Distaff. The Championship drew six runners, including Woods N Water, a two-time stakes winner on turf last year in races at Evangeline Downs and Louisiana Downs, and Ballinonabudget, winner of the Boyd Rewards last out at Delta. Touchuponastar boasts a 10-for-13 career record compiled while racing at a variety of tracks in Louisiana and at Lone Star Park in Texas. He’s 4 for 4 on the six-furlong oval at Delta. “So far, he’s kind of liked every track he’s been at,” said Jake Delhomme, the retired NFL quarterback whose Set-Hut stable owns Touchuponastar. “At Delta, it seems like he likes that sandy surface and it seems like he corners extremely well there. So far, so good. Hopefully, we can possibly keep it going.” Touchuponastar is following the same race pattern into this year’s Championship as he did last year, when he won by 2 1/2 lengths to earn a Beyer Speed Figure of 101. He had come into the Championship off a victory in the Louisiana Champions Day Classic at 1 1/8 miles at Fair Grounds. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Tumbarumba ran back last Saturday at Gulfstream Park and won the Grade 3 Fred Hooper by a nose. “We certainly have a great deal of respect for Tumbarumba,” Delhomme said. “We were able to get to the lead and able to keep him measured. Tumbarumba, I love that horse, his grittiness. He proved his worth last Saturday at Gulfstream. He’s a never-quit horse. We’re very happy with our horse. Touch ran a very gritty race. “I got very lucky to buy him at a sale. He’s been a pleasure and we appreciate every day we have with him.” Delhomme’s brother Jeff Delhomme trains Touchuponastar. The horse will break from post 3 under regular rider Timothy Thornton. The last time the connections teamed at Delta with Touchuponastar, he defeated open company in the Delta Mile in November and was flattered when third-place finisher Five Star General came back to win the Tenacious at Fair Grounds. Touchuponastar is a seven-time stakes winner by Star Guitar. The Championship is slotted as the sixth of 11 races. First post is 5:15 p.m. Central. Distaff Free Like a Girl is the one to beat in the Distaff – if she runs. Trainer Chasey Deville-Pomier said earlier this week she had not yet decided if the one-mile race is a go as Free Like a Girl ran last Saturday. The millionaire shipped to Sam Houston and was second by a neck in the Grade 3, $300,000 Houston Ladies Classic. Free Like a Girl raced with the pace in the 1 1/16-mile race and put up a fight along the rail when confronted in the stretch by eventual winner Bellamore. Free Like a Girl earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 90. “She’s something,” Deville-Pomier said. “We were all very happy. Watching her gallop-out, she came back for [Bellamore] again. I was laughing. She’s definitely game. You can’t deny that.” Free Like a Girl won last year’s Distaff, and while she’s a multiple stakes winner sprinting, she’s arguably proving to be at her best over a route of ground. “I feel like as she’s matured, she kind of wants to be able to go two turns,” Deville-Pomier said. “When she was younger, it was harder to get her to relax and get her settled. She’s matured, is getting older, and starting to realize, ‘I like this better.’ ” Vicente Del-Cid has the mount from post 6. Free Like a Girl is 5 for 7 at Delta, which is her home track. She is 15 for 34 overall in her career. Free Like a Girl is a 5-year-old daughter of El Deal. Others making up the Distaff field of eight include Thetruthisthetruth, who ranked as one of the winningest horses in North America last year when she went 9 for 13. She is moving back to two turns, and the last time she raced at the configuration she won a starter allowance Dec. 30 at Fair Grounds. Floyd Wethey Jr. has the mount for trainer Orrin Cogburn. Juveniles in spotlight Stakes winners El Dinero, Good and Stout, Spinning Aces, and Stovall are among nine entered in the $100,000 Prince for 3-year-olds at a mile. Spinning Aces won over open company in November in the $100,000 Jean Lafitte at Delta. The race was run at seven furlongs, which is a two-turn configuration over the local strip. Good and Stout won the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile in his last start, Dec. 9 at Fair Grounds. The $100,000 Starlet is for 2-year-old fillies at a mile, and Guitar Solo will get good support stretching out to two turns off a win in the $100,000 fillies division of the Louisiana Futurity at Fair Grounds. Lightofmaine is already proven at two turns, having won a December allowance at Delta. Emily’s Bullet is moving back to two turns. She won the $100,000 Louisiana Jewel going two turns in October at Delta. “She definitely wants to go longer,” Deville-Pomier said. “I think she’ll run good. I hope she runs her race.” Del-Cid has the mount from post 2. Sprint divisions Bron and Brow will be looking for his second straight stakes win when he takes on nine others in the $100,000 Sprint. He drew post 7 for the five-furlong race that he captured in 2023. Reylu Gutierrez has the mount for Gary Barber and trainer Mark Casse. Basalt Street is cutting back to one turn for the $100,000 Matron at five furlongs. She is a multiple winner at the configuration, with one of her recent sprint victories coming at five furlongs at Woodbine. Basalt Street last raced Dec. 29 and won the Rosewater over 7 1/2 furlongs at Delta. Corey Lanerie has the mount for trainer Gary Scherer. Others making up the seven-horse field include Charlie T, a turf specialist who is back on dirt. She is a winner at Delta. The card Saturday is the richest of the meet that runs through Feb. 24. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
