Tote error leads to Rainbow 6 carryover snafu
AmTote and the Maryland Jockey Club made an error when tabulating the payoffs for the Rainbow 6 at Laurel Park on Saturday, incorrectly reporting a carryover when indeed the bet was hit.
Laurel initially transmitted there would be a Rainbow 6 carryover of $22,259 into the Sunday card. Instead, there appear to be two winning combinations, but because they are on the same ticket, they are considered individual winners.
When Grand Lassie was a veterinarian scratch prior to the start of race 7, her wagers were transferred to the betting favorite, Value Added, who won and paid $3.20.
At the end of the sequence, it appears the tote system operators thought there were two winning tickets, one on Value Added and another that scratched into the winning combination. Both 20-cent tickets were reported to have paid $2,263, and that there would be a carryover into Sunday.
But it appears both winning combinations occurred on the same ticket. Therefore, the ticket was deemed to have a pair of $13,393 winning combinations.
The Rainbow 6 jackpot typically only pays out when there is a single winning combination, which in this case would have been worth $26,786.
AmTote and the Maryland Jockey Club are both owned by The Stronach Group. Officials of the Maryland Jockey Club could not be reached for comment Saturday night.
