All-sources handle at all California tracks declined 5 percent in 2025 despite the absence of Thoroughbred racing in Northern California and the loss of a vital weekend at Santa Anita in December because of rain, according to figures released at Wednesday’s California Horse Racing Board meeting. Handle at all venues was more than $2.66 billion in 2025 compared to more than $2.8 billion in 2024. Handle on Thoroughbred meetings declined 7 percent, from more than $2.54 billion in 2024 to more than $2.37 billion in 2025. Handle on night meetings of harness racing and lower-level Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos rose 6 percent, to more than $291.7 million. The only Thoroughbred venues to race in California in 2025 were Del Mar, Los Alamitos and Santa Anita in Southern California. In 2024, racing was conducted at those tracks as well as Golden Gate Fields and fair venues in Ferndale, Fresno, Pleasanton, Sacramento and Santa Rosa, all in Northern California. There has been no Thoroughbred racing in Northern California since December 2024 at Pleasanton. The racing board rejected proposals to conduct meetings at three fair venues in 2025. In voting against the proposals, some commissioners cited the need to financially support purses at Southern California tracks, insisting the state have a single circuit for Thoroughbreds. A proposal to race at three venues in Northern California was tabled by the racing board on Wednesday and is scheduled to be heard at a meeting in February. Harness racing ceased at Cal-Expo in Sacramento last May. Harness racing supporters have been granted racing dates at Fresno, beginning in November. Santa Anita lost two highly-anticipated days of racing on Dec. 26-27, a Friday and Saturday, because of rain, but did conduct a makeup day on Dec. 29. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
