Torrance upsets Against the Law

Torrance whipped the best juvenile fillies around in Turf Paradise's $40,000 Arizona Juvenile Fillies on Saturday.

Owned by Dennis Weir and trained by Michael Stewart, Torrance ($15.80) as she renewed what was previously a one-sided rivalry with 1-10 favorite Against the Law in the 6 1/2-furlong race. She bided her time midpack in the field of six, swung wide for the stretch run, and blasted home to win by 6 1/4 lengths under Lorenzo Lopez. Staten Island, second choice in the wagering, dueled early with Against the Law, fell back on the far turn but came on again to get second. Against the Law dueled early but weakened in the lane to finish third.

Torrance ran the distance in 1:18.61. The winner's share of $24,000 pushed her earnings to $37,570 from 2 wins in 4 starts. Her two previous losses both came in stakes at the hands of Against the Law, who had her four-race win streak snapped here.
