Mishriff, The Summit, and Victor Ludorum, the first three home in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club on July 5, meet again Saturday at Deauville in the Group 2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano. Mishriff, trained by John Gosden, was making his group stakes debut in the Prix du Jockey Club, the French Derby, and won by 1 3/4 lengths thanks to an electric turn of foot in deep stretch. :: French racing: Download free PPs Irish jockey David Egan is the first-call rider for Mishriff’s Qatar-based owner, Prince Faisal, but was unable to ride the French Derby because of COVID-19 travel restrictions and misses the mount Saturday because of a suspension incurred in England. Frankie Dettori travels to ride Mishriff in the Ornano and favored Palace Pier on Sunday at Deauville in the Prix Jacques le Marois, though the trip means he must undergo a 14-day quarantine upon returning to England. Mishriff had been mentioned as a candidate for the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes next weekend in England but instead takes his chance again in France, where the ground at Deauville could come up soft by post time. Mishriff, who still should have plenty of improvement in him, should be fine over the race’s 1 1/4-mile trip though very wet conditions could blunt the acceleration he showed in his most recent start. The Summit doesn’t mind leading and has run well before over wet courses, while Victor Ludorum was defeated in the French Derby as the favorite after breaking from a disadvantageous wide draw. Victor Ludorum was a Group 1 winner at age 2 and captured the French 2000 Guineas earlier this year. Also set to see action Saturday at Deauville is France’s leading older horse, Sottsass, who got a summer break following a narrow victory over Way to Paris on June 14 in the Group 1 Prix Ganay. Sottsass starts favored in the Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes over 1 1/4 miles as trainer Jean-Claude Rouget and owner Peter Brant gear the 4-year-old colt up for a run at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, a race in which he was third last year. Sottsass’s final Arc prep has yet to be determined though Rouget mentioned the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown as one possibility.
