Top Mr. Prospector nominees may go elsewhere

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Nominations came up light for the first graded stakes of the meet, Saturday’s Grade 3 Mr. Prospector, with only 13 horses on the list including four from the barn of trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. One of those, the Grade 1 winner Drain the Clock, is entered under allowance conditions in Friday’s main event. Quick Tempo, another of the Mr. Prospector nominees, is entered in the same race while Miles Ahead won last Saturday’s Claiming Crown Rapid Transit and also has been ruled out for the Mr. Prospector.
Among the more intriguing names on the list is Dennis’ Moment, who finished a well-beaten 10th here earlier this year in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth and returns a one-turn specialist, having finally gotten back on the winning track with a seven-furlong allowance victory on Oct. 21 at Keeneland. Dennis’ Moment was among a half-dozen horses trainer Dale Romans shipped here earlier in the week.

“We’re very much on the fringe for the race at the moment,” Romans said by phone Monday. “He’ll gallop for the first time [Tuesday] morning and I’ll talk it over with the owner and then decide whether to enter. Corey Lanerie will likely have the mount if he goes.”
Entries for the Mr. Prospector will be drawn along with the rest of Saturday’s card on Wednesday.
