8. Laffit Pincay Jr., Caveat, 1983
Caveat and Slew o' Gold finished third and fourth in the Kentucky Derby, and both skipped the Preakness. The two were close in ability, and the Belmont outcome was going to be determined strictly by one of the most aggressive rides in Belmont history. Pincay was nearly disqualified for this performance aboard Caveat, but was absolved by the stewards. He made a daring inside move at the top of the stretch, bouncing off tiring front-runner Au Point and caroming off the inside rail before breaking into the clear to move past Slew o' Gold and take the race. As a side note, this win would be the first of Pincay’s three straight Belmont victories, and the second of five consecutive victories by trainer Woody Stephens.
