Too Much Kiki will continue to add distance in Bara Lass

Too Much Kiki’s win in the Darby’s Daughter division of the Texas Stallion Stakes on Saturday launched what could be a very productive Sam Houston meet for the Texas-bred daughter of Too Much Bling.

She is eligible for a number of restricted stakes throughout the season that runs into April.

“We’ve always liked her, been very high on her,” said trainer Bret Calhoun. “She started out at Lone Star, did well, and we ended up just giving her time off, pointing for this series of races at Sam Houston.”

Too Much Kiki won her debut in the Pan Zareta division of the Texas Stallion Stakes in June at Lone Star for Mansfield Racing and also ran third in a division of the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity at the same track in July. She improved her career record to 3 for 4 with her win in the Darby’s Daughter.

“I think she’s a filly that would appreciate more distance,” Calhoun said. “She’s just shown her class and ability to win at shorter than ideal distances for her. The next race we’re pointing for is the Bara Lass – we’ll get another sixteenth of a mile, at least.”

The $75,000 Bara Lass on Jan. 27 is a six-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies bred in Texas.

Calhoun hopes to move Too Much Kiki to two turns late in the meet, for the $100,000 Texas Thoroughbred Association Oaks on March 23.

◗ Apprentice jockey Erik Asmussen, son of Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen and the brother of Oaklawn-based jockey Keith Asmussen, won the first race of his career when he guided Cleat to victory in the Jan. 5 season opener at Sam Houston.
