Too Many Twizzlers has right running style in speed-filled My Frenchman Stakes

Too Many Twizzlers’s slow-starting ways could put him in a good spot Sunday at Monmouth Park. The colt has failed to break with the field in his two races, and similar positioning would ensure Too Many Twizzlers doesn’t get caught up in what might become a mad scramble for the early lead in the $100,000 My Frenchman Stakes.
The My Frenchman, for 3-year-olds at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf, drew seven entrants, three of whom have shown serious front-running habits. One Timer, who is expected to be scratched from a race at Saratoga in favor of the My Frenchman, has been on or just off the pace in all five of his starts, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last fall at Del Mar.

But he might not be as quick as That’s Right, who has been transformed his last two races by a switch from dirt to turf. That’s Right was a six-race maiden with a career-best 60 Beyer Speed Figure before he was tried on turf May 30. That’s Right won sprinting that day by five lengths with a 90 Beyer and got a 95 crushing first-level turf-sprint allowance foes June 17 at Monmouth.
That’s Right has a 111 TimeformUS early pace number, One Timer a 115, and Florida shipper Classicstateofmind a 109. Classicstateofmind last saw racing action May 14 when he led wire to wire in the $75,000 Roar, a Gulfstream Park turf sprint for 3-year-olds.
One Timer, Jareth Loveberry in from Colonial Downs to ride for trainer Larry Rivelli, might prefer synthetic surfaces to turf. He’s 3 for 3, all open-length wins, over three different synthetic tracks with Beyers of 80, 80, and 91, and 1 for 2 on turf, with the victory by three-quarters of a length in the Speakeasy last Oct. 1 at Santa Anita. One Timer faded to ninth, albeit only two lengths behind the winner, in the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint, and, wearing front bandages for the first time, he crushed foes in his lone 2022 start, the Tom Ridge Stakes on May 23 over the Tapeta Footings surface at Presque Isle Downs.
Too Many Twizzlers, trained at Fair Hill in Maryland by Arnaud Delacour, broke slowly and rallied mildly to finish fourth turf sprinting in his career debut May 29 at Monmouth. He improved considerably in a second-start maiden win over older horses. Off a beat slowly once again, Too Many Twizzlers worked out a lovely ground-saving trip. His Beyer rose from 63 to 83 and he was visually impressive running away from some decent rivals through the final furlong.
