Is Too gets first stakes win in off-the-turf Opelousas

Is Too became a stakes winner Friday night at Evangeline Downs, driving to a 1 1/4-length victory over Mariah’s Galaxy in the $50,000 Opelousas, which was moved from turf to dirt. It was another half-length back to Roussalka in third.
The Opelousas, for fillies and mares, was scheduled for a mile on turf but was instead run on a fast main tack. The surface switch led to the scratch of leading contender Corluna, according to her trainer, Sarah Delany.
Evangeline has been bracing for extreme weather from Tropical Storm Barry and has already canceled Saturday night’s races. There was no training Saturday.
Is Too ($6) was always prominent in the Opelousas, stalking Mi Copa Rebosa through an opening quarter in 24.98 seconds, then taking over through fractions of 49.51 for the half-mile and 1:14.19 for six furlongs. She covered the distance in 1:39.67.
Colby Hernandez was aboard for trainer Eddie Johnston.
Is Too is a daughter of Midshipman who races for Baronne Farms. She had run second in a pair of stakes earlier in her career before the breakthrough win in the Opelousas. Is Too has now won 5 of 14 starts for earnings of $157,640.
