Too Flash for You connects in All American Derby
Last February, when Too Flash for You won the $85,320 New Mexico Horse Breeders Association Stakes at Sunland Park, co-owner Jose Espinoz had a clear goal for the summer. He wanted a shot at the $1.9 million All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs in August.
Sunday, more than six months and three races later, Espinoza’s plan worked to perfection.
Too Flash for You won the richest race of his career in the All American Derby over 440 yards. The win gave Too Flash for You a berth for the $750,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos on Dec. 13, a race that plays an important role in year-end voting.
Ridden by Larry Gamez, Too Flash for You ($19.60) won the All American Derby by a half-length over 12-1 Five Bar Cartel. Houdini, the 8-5 favorite, finished third, losing by three-quarters of a length. Too Flash for You, a gelding by First Moonflash, was timed in 21.30 seconds.
Too Flash for You was behind Five Bar Cartel after 100 yards but took the lead midway through the race.
“Everything came together,” said winning trainer Wes Giles. “We had lots of room and a clean break and the horse ran a huge race.”
Big Dashing Perry was fourth, followed by Mon Ti Dash, J Bar, Kates Dynasty, The Ultimate Eagle, and Down Side Magician. Potenzza was injured in the trials, and was retired to be bred next year.
Too Flash for You, co-owned by Michele Laird, has won 5 of 13 starts and earned $942,189.
