Tonal Impact, coming off two high-figured allowance wins, will make his next start in the Grade 2, $350,000 Suburban Stakes here July 8, trainer Linda Rice said Wednesday.
Tonal Impact was nominated to this Saturday’s Grade 2, $250,000 John Nerud Stakes going seven furlongs, but Rice wants to give the 5-year-old gelding a try at the 1 1/4-mile Suburban. Two starts back, Tonal Impact won a second-level allowance going 1 1/8 miles before coming back 18 days later to win a third-level allowance going a one-turn mile. He earned a 99 Beyer Speed Figure for the last win.
“He’s a great big, giant horse with a long stride,” Rice said. “I think he likes the Belmont course.”
The Suburban, based on nominations, is not expected to have a large field. Among those expected are Clapton, winner of the Grade 3 Ghostzapper, and Unbridled Bomber. Art Collector, Charge It, and Skippylongstocking are other notable names that are nominated.
Five of the 17 Suburban nominees are entered in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Stephen Foster at Ellis Park.
By All Means making progress
By All Means, the filly who flipped in the paddock and was scratched out of an allowance race on June 18 at Belmont has shown signs of improvement at Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists, a clinic across the street from Belmont Park, trainer Christophe Clement said Wednesday.
“She’s standing and moving and eating,” Clement said. “Her condition has improved at the Ruffian clinic.”
By All Means, a French-bred filly, could not get back to her feet after flipping in the paddock prior to the second race on June 18. She was anesthetized and placed on an equine ambulance and transported to the Ruffian clinic.
By All Means was a listed stakes winner in France. She finished third in her lone U.S. start, the Monroe Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
