The ability to lead or stalk the pace has led to three stakes wins since May 2022 for Tom’s Regret, a 4-year-old California-bred filly. Tom’s Regret had a perfect trip when she closed from third of four to win the Pleasanton Oaks at the Alameda county fair in Pleasanton, Calif., on June 15. It is easy to see Tom’s Regret having a similar patient trip against only four rivals in Saturday’s $50,000 Governor’s Cup Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs at Cal-Expo in Sacramento. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Trained by Steve Miyadi for the partnership of Todd Sheehan’s Cinema Thoroughbreds, Michelle Beckerle, Saul Carrillo, Victor Flores, Burton Johnston, and Eugene Zondlo, Tom’s Regret drew post 4 and will be ridden by Luis Jimenez. Last month, Jimenez, 24, won the first stakes of his career in the Pleasanton Oaks. To win the Governor’s Cup aboard Tom’s Regret, Jimenez must catch Chancery Way, who won the race in 2023, and Blevys Tiger, who returned from a layoff of more than eight months to win an allowance race in her 3-year-old debut at Pleasanton on June 21. Blevys Tiger led throughout that race. Chancery Way, a four-time stakes winner, was a well-beaten third in the Pleasanton Oaks after setting the pace. She faded through the stretch to lose by 5 1/4 lengths. With an inside post, Chancery Way will be prominent from the start of the Governor’s Cup. Jimenez rode Tom’s Regret for the first time on June 15. Earlier this year, Tom’s Regret finished third in the Desert Stormer Stakes at six furlongs for fillies and mares at Santa Anita on June 2 after setting the pace. The Governor’s Cup Stakes is part of an eight-race program that begins at 8 p.m. Eastern or 5 p.m. Pacific.
