Tom’s Regret closed from a stalking position to take the lead on the turn of the $70,500 Mary Clare Schmitt Pleasanton Oaks at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton on Saturday, winning the sprint stakes for fillies and mares for the second consecutive year.

Tom’s Regret’s win on Saturday gave 24-year-old jockey Luis Jimenez his first stakes win. Jimenez began riding last year.

The favorite in a field of four, Tom’s Regret ($4.80) stalked pacesetter Chancery Way through an opening quarter-mile in a hand-timed 23.70 seconds. Chancery Way led on the turn while racing well off the rail. Tom’s Regret closed to the inside of Chancery Way to take the lead.

Tom’s Regret pulled clear to win by 3 1/2 lengths over 9-5 Scary Fast Ride, who finished 1 3/4 lengths clear of 8-5 Chancery Way. Smiling Molly (11-1) finished fourth, beaten 9 1/2 lengths.

Tom’s Regret ran six furlongs in 1:10.73, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 88.

Swift Nonni was scratched on Thursday. Pushiness, the winner of CTBA Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar last August, was withdrawn on Saturday. Pushiness has yet to race this year.

Tom’s Regret, a 4-year-old filly by Tom’s Tribute, won her third stakes on Saturday. Aside from consecutive runnings of the Pleasanton Oaks, Tom’s Regret won the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes against males as a 2-year-old at Churchill Downs in May 2022. She has won 4 of 11 starts and earned $360,823.

The win on Saturday ended a two-race losing streak since the 2023 Pleasanton Oaks for Tom’s Regret. Earlier this year at Santa Anita, Tom’s Regret was second in an allowance race for fillies and mares on turf, and third in the Desert Stormer Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs on dirt on June 2.

Tom’s Regret races for the partnership of Todd Sheehan’s Cinema Thoroughbreds, Michelle Beckerle, Saul Carrillo, Victor Flores, Burton Johnson, and Eugene Zondlo and trainer Steve Miyadi.
