Tomasello holds off Dancin in Da’nile to prevail in Singspiel Stakes

Michael Burns Tomasello returned $13 in winning the Singspiel Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The wild card Tomasello was well regarded by trainer Mark Casse heading into Saturday’s Grade 3 Singspiel at Woodbine, and he got the job done with Lasix added for the 1 3/8-mile main turf event.

With Emma-Jayne Wilson aboard, Tomasello tracked the dueling Chiefswood Stables runners Coburg and English Actor on the backstretch before making a three-wide bid to the lead entering the lane.

Dancin in Da’nile and Side Street both took dead aim at Tomasello in the final furlong, but Tomasello held his ground to prevail by a half-length over the former. Side Street finished another head back in third while the favored shipper Mesero checked in fourth in the 10-horse field.

Over a course labeled as good, the final time was 2:16.67.

“It was the ideal setup, the way I hoped it would be,” Wilson said. “My intention was to get my horse to settle and get into a nice rhythm going 1 3/8 miles. It worked out. I sat in behind the two Chiefswoods and they were setting a nice pace. My horse settled in behind them. When I tipped him off the inside down the lane and he built up into it, he was going to have to hold them off, and I knew he had a lot in him.”

Tomasello ($13) earned $105,000 of the $186,850 purse for the partnership of Ironhorse Racing Stable and T-N-T Equine Holdings. The son of Authentic was making his local debut and Casse was confident heading into the race that he would rebound off a poor showing at Gulfstream.

“He didn’t run any good last time, but he’s better than what it looks,” said Casse, who is now tied for the leading stakes-winning trainer at the Woodbine meet with six wins.
