As a rare white Thoroughbred, the Japanese filly Sodashi was always going to catch the eye. Her race record is as notable as her looks. Sodashi is a champion unbeaten in five starts, but will have her toughest test in the Grade 1 Japanese Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at Tokyo Racecourse on Sunday. The $2.3 million Japanese Oaks, formally known as the Yushun Himba, will be Sodashi’s first start at 1 1/2 miles. ::Get free PPs for Tokyo Racecourse here.  Trained by Naosuke Sugai for Kaneko Makoto Holdings, Sodashi won her 2021 debut in the Grade 1 Japanese 1000 Guineas at a mile at Hanshin Racecourse on April 11. Sodashi won her first two starts at 1 1/8 miles last July and September, the longest races of her career. Sugai told Japan Racing Association publicists earlier this week that the distance of the Japanese Oaks is not a major concern. “People ask about the distance, but I’ve had my sights set on the Oaks from her debut and thought she was great in the” 1000 Guineas, he said. “I know she can handle more ground. “She has handled all the work we’ve given her with ease. She’s been more than ideal and, in a good way, nothing has changed.” :: Join DRF Bets and play the races with a $250 First Deposit Bonus. Click to learn more. A unanimous choice as the champion 2-year-old filly of 2020, Sodashi is part of a full field of 18 in the Japanese Oaks, which has a post time of 2:40 a.m. Eastern, on Sunday, or 11:40 p.m. Pacific, on Saturday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com. Sodashi won the 1000 Guineas by a neck over Satono Reinas, with Fine Rouge third by three-quarters of a length. Satono Reinas is not part of the Japanese Oaks field, but Fine Rouge is entered even though she is not rated as a major threat to Sodashi. Akaitorino Musume, the expected second choice, won the Grade 3 Queen Cup at a mile in February and was fourth in the 1000 Guineas. Akaitorino Musume is by top Japanese stallion Deep Impact, and is out of Apapane, who finished in a dead-heat for first in the Japanese Oaks in 2010 and swept the Japanese Triple Crown for 3-year-old fillies that year. Uberleben should handle the distance. She was beaten three times in graded stakes by Sodashi in 2020 and was third in the Grade 2 Flora Stakes at 1 1/4 miles at Tokyo Racecourse on April 25.
