Tohill closing in on 4,000 career wins
Jockey Ken Tohill, who is riding at Oaklawn Park, is approaching a milestone of 4,000 Thoroughbred wins in North America. He had won 3,989 Thoroughbred wins through Tuesday and overall has won 4,051 races in his career, according to Daily Racing Form statistics.
Tohill has had 29,908 Thoroughbred mounts, and the horses have earned a collective $67 million. Tohill has won more than 200 stakes, according to Daily Racing Form records. He rode his first winner on June 26, 1979, at Pleasanton.
◗ Oaklawn reported all-sources handle of $5.7 million on its nine-race opening-day card Dec. 3 and an estimated attendance of 15,000. The track handled $6.5 million on 10 races on Dec. 4, and the local crowd was an estimated 20,000.
◗ Oaklawn processed 22 claims over its three-day opening weekend. There were $400,000 in transactions, according to numbers provided by the track. Oaklawn had a total of 28 races.
◗ The current meet leaders after the three-day opening weekend are owner Built Wright Stable, trainer Steve Asmussen, and jockey Francisco Arrieta.
◗ New riders in the entries this week include Geovanni Franco and top apprentice John Hiraldo.
