Toddchero gets another shot at Campfire Creed in Clever Trevor
Toddchero will have some new variables working in his favor Friday night when he attempts to turn the tables on Campfire Creed in the $100,000 Clever Trevor at Remington Park.
The seven furlong race for 2-year-olds is the final local steppingstone to the $400,000 Springboard Mile, a Kentucky Derby points race to be held Dec. 17.
The Kip Deville on Sept. 25 was the first local race toward the Springboard Mile, and Campfire Creed won the six furlong sprint with Toddchero third. Toddchero broke from the rail that afternoon and will start from the outside post 12 Friday.
“He ran a good race last time,” said Jayde Gelner, who trains Toddchero. “He was just covered up and begging for racing room.
“We’ve got a nice post this time.”
Gelner hopes the outside gate gives jockey Lane Luzzi options on Toddchero, who has tactical speed. The trainer also is hopeful the added ground will be a benefit Friday.
“I like it,” Gelner said. “He galloped out well last time and should be able to cover the extra furlong.”
Gelner has had a hot hand in 2-year-old stakes this season. Ghost Hero won his maiden last Friday in the $100,000 Oklahoma Classics Juvenile at Remington and is headed for the track’s Don McNeill, said Gelner. And in August, Gelner sent out Cajun Gumbo to win the $60,000 fillies division of the D.S. “Shine” Young Memorial Futurity at Evangeline Downs.
Toddchero showed his talent early on, when after winning at Lone Star Park in his debut he finished second to Tyler’s Tribe in the Prairie Gold Juvenile at Prairie Meadows in July. Tyler’s Tribe is now bound for the Breeders’ Cup.
“We thought we were going to win that race and then we saw what Tyler’s Tribe was,” Gelner said. “He’d only run one time before – ran really fast and really good. Plenty of horses do that first time and can’t repeat it. He has shown what he was from his first race. It kind of gives us a good excuse for not winning – getting beat by Tyler’s Tribe.”
Toddchero races for Mark Norman and Norman Stables.
Campfire Creed won his maiden in his second start Aug. 20 at Remington Park. He rolled by 5 1/4 lengths in the maiden special weight and backed up the performance with a win in the Kip Deville. Gerardo Mora was aboard for both races and has the mount Friday from post 10 for owner Dennis E. Foster and trainer Danny Pish.
Wildatlanticstorm was second in the Kip Deville. He was favored after winning a local allowance by more than five lengths. David Cabrera has the mount Friday from post 11 for trainer Ray Ashford Jr.
