Today may be the day for Someday Special
If Someday Special can run as well on dirt as she has on turf, she could be the winner in what appears to be a wide-open feature Saturday at Emerald Downs.
That is a big if, but there is no doubt the Frank Lucarelli-trained Kentucky-bred is going to appreciate the class relief with the drop into a $25,000 claimer after not being able to keep up in the $50,000 Irish Day on July 14.
The one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies drew eight horses and goes as race 7 on an eight-race card that begins at 5 p.m. Pacific.
Someday Special is the only horse in the field that has won going around two turns. It was her only win, and it came going a mile on turf in a $20,000 maiden claimer Dec. 29 at Golden Gate Fields.
She went into the Irish Day off a decent effort in a $50,000 starter race June 1 at Golden Gate. After trailing the field early in the one-mile race on turf, she made a nice move to put herself into contention but lost a lot of momentum when she went wide on the second turn.
In the Irish Day she got bumped around leaving the starting gate, and when it looked like she might get involved in the 1 1/16-mile she hung. She may have bled, as she will be running on Lasix for the first time.
A half-sister to Praying for Cash, who won the Grade 3 Long Branch Breeders’ Cup and finished second in the Grade 1 Haskell, Someday Special will break from post 5 with Kevin Orozco riding.
KEY CONTENDERS
Someday Special, by Animal Kingdom
Last 3 Beyers: 46-71-47
◗ The 71 Beyer Speed Figure she received for her fifth-place finish on turf two back stands out, and she should be rolling late in a race chock-full of speed.
◗ Adding to her appeal is that Lucarelli has a 16 percent strike rate and $3.24 return on investment with horses running on Lasix the first time the past five years.
Sadie Sue, by Sixthirteen
Last 3 Beyers: 62-52-51
◗ She looked good winning a $25,000 claimer for nonwinners of two in her first start for trainer Blaine Wright on June 28. Acting on behalf of On The Rocks, Wright claimed her for $15,000 on May 26, when she finished second by a head in the 5 1/2-furlong race for nonwinners of two.
◗ There are mostly sprinters in the family, but her dam won going long, and Wright has won with 23 percent of his starters at Emerald that were going a mile or longer the first time the past five years.
◗ She can stalk what figures to be an honest and contested pace.

◗ Trained by Tim McCanna, she faded after chasing a fast pace in her latest start, but has the pedigree to thrive at the distance and could be dangerous if Ryan Barber can ease her into a stalking position after she breaks from post 4.
