Tiz a Slam seeks a repeat in Nijinsky

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Tiz a Slam will look to record his third consecutive win in Sunday’s feature at Woodbine, the Grade 2, $175,000 Nijinsky Stakes over 1 1/2 miles on the E. P. Taylor Turf Course.
The 5-year-old Tiz a Slam has recorded back-to-back wins going long on the turf in the Grade 3 Louisville Stakes at Churchill Downs on May 18 and the Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes at Woodbine on June 22. In both events, Tiz a Slam has set slow paces before sprinting home for the victory.
Tiz a Slam will also be looking to repeat in the Nijinsky after he won last year’s event by a half-length over Mekhtaal.

◗ Trainer Roger Attfield said Tiz a Slam is coming into the Nijinsky in good order following a five-furlong breeze in 59.80 seconds on the turf training course on July 21.
Avie’s Mesa, by Sky Mesa
Last 3 Beyers: 93-91-82
◗ Avie’s Mesa finished second to Tiz a Slam in the Singspiel Stakes after stalking him in the early going. If Tiz a Slam faces more pace pressure, Avie’s Mesa could be right there to take advantage.
Sir Sahib, by Fort Larned
Last 3 Beyers: 91-77-82
◗ Sir Sahib was off of the pace early in the Singspiel, but did rally into the slow fractions to finish third. He was making just his second start for trainer Kevin Attard in the Singspiel and could be ready to peak in the third start of his 2019 campaign.
Pumpkin Rumble, by English Channel
Last 3 Beyers: 93-94-94
◗ He returns to the turf for the first time since June 2018, but 28 of his 43 career starts have come on the grass.
◗ After finishing his 2018 campaign with three straight wins, he made his seasonal debut in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes over 1 1/4-miles on Tapeta on June 30. He held the lead late but went on to finish a close third behind winner Are You Kidding Me.
King Corrie gets six
Also on the card is the $100,000 King Corrie Stakes, a six-furlong sprint on Tapeta for 3-year-olds headed by Souper Success.
Souper Success won the Woodstock Stakes at this distance in his first start of the year on April 27, and most recently finished second in the restricted Bold Ruckus Stakes on turf on June 2 for trainer Mike De Paulo.
Trainers Larry Rivelli and Bob Tiller have both entered a pair of horses in the King Corrie. Rivelli has entered Hurricane Highway, who makes his stakes debut, and Big Drink of Water, who won the Victoria Stakes at Woodbine last season. Tiller, meanwhile, has entered Corduroy Road, who finished third in the Bold Ruckus two starts back, and Trappeze Artist, who finished second while facing older horses in an allowance event on July 6.
Rounding out the field in the King Corrie is Olympic Runner for trainer Mark Casse. Olympic Runner won an allowance event over seven furlongs in his most recent start on July 14.
