Tiz a Slam responds when challenged to win Dominion Day

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Tiz a Slam ($25) set sail on an easy lead and kept on going to take the $141,500 Dominion Day Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday.
With Steven Bahen aboard, Tiz a Slam set sleepy fractions in the 10-furlong contest. The favored Melmich seemed headed for victory after joining him up front in the stretch, but Tiz a Slam dug in to win by 1 1/4 lengths in 2:03.11.
Are You Kidding Me finished another two lengths back, edging out Gigantic Breeze for third. Black Sea, Sir Dudley Digges, and Dragon Bay completed the order of finish.
“I knew we were going pretty slow,” said Bahen. “He was tugging me the whole way. He got some good fractions. That’s why he finished off so strong.”
By Tiznow, Tiz a Slam earned $90,000 for Chiefswood Stable and trainer Roger Attfield, who was winning the Grade 3 fixture for the fourth time.
• Silent Sonet ($8.10) dominated the opposition in Sunday’s $102,000 Zadracarta Stakes under Eurico Da Silva. She assumed a stalking position in the seven-furlong turf sprint and took control from pacesetter Dublin Diva at the top of the stretch before drawing clear for a 1 1/4-length tally in 1:19.74.
Niigon’s Eclipse came wide for second, and Sugar Jones checked in third in the 10-horse field of Ontario-bred distaffers.
“Our plan was to stay back a little bit more,” said Da Silva. “She was very keen. She broke good and positioned herself in second or third place. She was traveling very easy. I didn’t want to bother her. She was happy where she was. When we turned for home, she kicked from there.”
A daughter of Silent Name, Silent Sonet banked $60,000 for owner Ivan Dalos and trainer Nick Gonzalez.
