Tiz a Slam all the way as favorite in Singspiel Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Tiz a Slam ($3.30) figured to benefit from an easy lead in Saturday’s $144,900 Singspiel Stakes, and that scenario played out successfully in the 1 1/2-mile turf marathon at Woodbine.
Tiz a Slam, the 125-pound highweight, gave trainer Roger Attfield his eighth victory in the Grade 3 Singspiel, which has been run only 15 times. He set dawdling fractions under Steven Bahen and then turned back bids from Avie’s Mesa and Sir Sahib in the stretch to prevail by two lengths over the former, finishing in 2:29.99 over the “good” ground.
Sir Sahib checked in third, and Itstartswithadrink finished a distant fourth. The popular Melmich, the 2-1 second choice in the five-horse field, was pulled up in the stretch, having bled badly. He was vanned off.
“It looked like there was no speed to contend with, and that’s how he likes to do it,” Bahen said. “When he gets those easy fractions, he’s very tough down the lane. He’s very versatile. He’ll run on everything.”
Tiz a Slam banked $94,500 for owner-breeder Chiefswood Stable. The 5-year-old son of Tiznow had also captured his previous start in the Grade 3 Louisville at Churchill Downs. He has won eight of 25 lifetime starts and just more than $1.1 million.
