Tiz the Law makes good impression in Gulfstream workout appearance

Tiz the Law wins the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park
Barbara D. Livingston Champagne winner Tiz the Law breezed an easy half-mile Monday at Palm Meadows.

Omaha Beach wasn’t the only big name on Sunday’s work tab at Gulfstream Park. The heavy favorite for next Saturday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup began his drill just as top 3-year-old prospect Tiz the Law was completing his, five furlongs in 1:01.41, with regular rider Manny Franco in from New York for the assignment.

Tiz the Law shipped down from his winter base at Palm Meadows early Sunday morning to get a run over this track two weeks in advance of his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 2 Holy Bull on Feb. 1. Tiz the Law, winner of the Grade 1 Champagne at 2, posted splits of 24.19 and 36.84 seconds over the somewhat cuppy racetrack before galloping out strongly into and around the turn, completing six panels in 1:14.59 before easing up seven-eighths in 1:27.41.

“I was very happy with the work, especially the way he galloped out so strong,” Tagg said. “Johnny Velazquez breezed him for me [at Palm Meadows] last week and said that the two tracks are pretty different and it wouldn’t hurt to bring him down here to get a feel for this one. Manny said he was looking around a little bit, but that’s to be expected since he’s a young horse working by himself.”

Tagg said all has gone well for Tiz the Law since he arrived in South Florida following his disappointing but troubled third-place finish in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club decided over a wet track at Churchill Downs.

“He’s just been flawless down here,” said Tagg. “Nothing fazes him. He’s a happy, contented horse. He’s done nothing wrong. He’ll have a half-mile work back at Palm Meadows next week just to keep him sharp. The hardest part now is the wait, while hoping you’ll have the luck and not draw an outside post in a race where they start almost on top of the clubhouse turn.”
