LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Six new names are among the 23 separately listed interests in the seventh and final pool in the 2020 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens Friday at noon Eastern for the customary three-day run. Churchill Downs has never had more than four futures pools since the first were offered in 1999, but these are unprecedented times amid the coronavirus pandemic. The 146th Derby has been postponed from its original May 2 date until Sept. 5, and the Belmont Stakes became the first leg of the Triple Crown when run June 20. The Preakness is set for Oct. 3. The new names for Pool 7 – including several who had been separately listed at least once before Pool 6 – are Anneau d’Or, Caracaro, Country Grammer, Finnick the Fierce, Shivaree, and Sole Volante. :: Want to get your Past Performances for free? Win and exacta wagering are available, with odds and will-pays locked in only when the pool closes Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern. Odds and will-pays can change substantially before the pool closes, depending on what transpires Saturday in the Travers at Saratoga. That’s where Tiz the Law, the Belmont winner and the 9-5 morning-line favorite for this pool, will be among 13 horses from Pool 7 in action between the two Derby points qualifiers scheduled for this weekend. The second points qualifier is the Ellis Park Derby, but it will be run Sunday at about 6:15, or after Pool 7 closes, according to Ellis racing secretary Dan Bork. Art Collector, one of three horses (with Honor A. P. and Uncle Chuck) listed as 6-1 co-second choices on the Pool 7 morning line composed by Churchill linemaker Mike Battaglia, figures as a heavy favorite in the Ellis Derby. Tiz the Law was the favorite in each of the last two pools. He closed at 2-1 in Pool 5, which was held June 26-28, and 5-2 in Pool 6. The mutuel field, the 24th or “all-others” option, closed as the favorite in each of the first four pools. Pool 1 was Nov. 27-30, Pool 2 was Feb. 7-9, Pool 3 was March 6-8, and Pool 4 was April 3-5. Just four horses have been listed as separate interests in all seven 2020 pools: Authentic, Honor A. P., Thousand Words, and Tiz the Law.
