Tiz the Bomb's connections have a world of options after the colt delivered as the favorite in the Grade 3, $600,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks on Saturday evening at Turfway Park. His authoritative 2 3/4-length score opened the door to classic races on both sides of the Atlantic. Tiz the Bomb ($5.20) earned 100 points toward the Kentucky Derby starting gate on the system used by Churchill Downs to determine the field, surely enough to place him in the 20-horse starting gate on the first Saturday in May. He also owns 10 points from winning the John Battaglia Memorial on March 5 at Turfway. However, he has also been under consideraton for the English 2000 Guineas on April 30 and the Epsom Derby on June 4. Trainer Ken McPeek, among the trailblazers of American conditioners sending horses to Europe, has also mentioned the Irish 2000 Guineas on May 21 and the Irish Derby on June 25 as possibilities. "Let's see," McPeek said. "Could he handle [the Derby]? I think he possibly could - he ran today like he could. We're not going to make a decision quickly. We'll have to figure out some details. But I think the farther he goes, the better. Just a real special colt." :: Want the best bonus in racing? Get a $250 deposit match, $10 free bet, and free Formulator with DRF Bets. Code: WINNING Tiz the Bomb, with regular rider Brian Hernandez Jr., in the irons, raced in a comfortable sixth early. Up front, Black Gold Stakes winner Dowagiac Chief was under pressure from Swing Shift to lead the field through an honest opening half in 47.06 seconds. Tiz the Bomb began revving up exiting the backstretch, and was making a sweeping move on the outside around the far turn. But it was second choice Tawny Port - coming off a fifth-place finish behind standout Derby prospects Epicenter and Smile Happy in the Grade 2 Risen Star in February - who got first run, splitting horses between Dowagiac Chief and Tiz the Bomb to poke his head in front briefly. But Hernandez was confident. "He was the best horse today," Hernandez succinctly said. "He traveled like it the whole way. Even around the second turn ... it felt like I had the other two horses measured pretty easily. He's the type of horse, too, that when he makes the lead, he kind of wants to wait around on horses. So I was patient with him today." Once straightened away into the lane, Tiz the Bomb cleared off from his foes, kicking clear in the final stages to his winning margin. The colt finished the nine furlongs on the Tapeta in 1:48.60, getting a 94 Beyer Speed Figure. Tawny Port was easily second by 3 1/2 lengths, picking up 40 Derby points with the effort. Rich Strike (20 points) overhauled Dowagiac Chief (10 points) by three-quarters of a length for third. They were followed, in order, by Royal Spirit, Cabo Spirit, Battaglia runner-up Stolen Base, Red Run, Constitutionlawyer, Swing Shift, Great Escape, and Optigogo, who was pulled up. :: Want to start playing with a $510 bankroll and have access to free Formulator? Learn more Tiz the Bomb, a Hit It a Bomb colt carrying the colors of Magdalena Racing, is a winner on three surfaces. After winning his maiden in a mile dirt race taken off the turf last summer at Ellis Park, he emerged as one of the standout turf 2-year-olds of last season, winning the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile and the Grade 2 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland before finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar. He made his 3-year-old debut with a seventh-place finish in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes in February, which McPeek attributed to the colt's dislike for having sand in his face at Gulfstream Park. He bounced back to win the Battaglia Memorial in his first start on a synthetic surface and setting him up for a tilt at the track's signature prep. If he moves on to the Kentucky Derby, he will have to contend with another dirt track. "He's worked really well over it," McPeek said of Churchill Downs. "We're certainly not going to rule it out. We've got some options - and they're really great options."
