Tioga Downs: Jim Campbell, Erv Miller trainees prove tough to beat in Kindergarten Classic
Five divisions of the Kindergarten Classic for 2-year-olds were held on Friday at Tioga Downs, and trainers Erv Miller and Jim Campbell both posted doubles.
Campbell's two wins were highlighted by Cloud Nine Fashion running her record to five wins from five starts in the second split of the filly trot. She came first-up at the half for Tim Tetrick and went on to down leader Jezzy's Legacy (Ray Schnittker) by a length and a half in a 1:56 mile. Campbell also joined forces with driver Mike Simons to win the lone colt trot flight with Cantab Fashion, by Cantab Hall, in 1:54 2/5.
Miller won the non-wagering filly pace contest with Michelon's Filly (Captaintreacherous) in 1:53 with his son Marcus driving, and then came back to annex the single colt pace dash with So Surreal gelding Cub Fan (Tyler Buter) from second-over in 1:54.
The only horse able to break the Campbell/Miller stranglehold was Starita in the first filly trot. Tetrick also had the call on the Joe Holloway-trained daughter of Trixton, and he moved her to the lead heading to the 57 4/5 half. From there, Starita couldn't be caught, winning by a length and a half in 1:56 flat.
The Kindergarten Classic now shifts back to the Meadowlands, with legs on October 12, 19, and 26, and the six-figure finals on November 3.
