Tim Thornton enjoying his best season

Delta Downs leading rider Timothy Thornton is closing out his best year on the track. He’s won 262 races from 1,000 mounts through Tuesday, which makes him one of the winningest riders in North America in 2018.

Thornton, along with Luis Quinones, trails only Irad Ortiz Jr., who had 322 wins on the year through Tuesday.

Thornton is a native of Lake Charles, La., who long had been a regular in Illinois. But after he briefly retired from the saddle he decided to launch his comeback in his native Louisiana. Earlier this year, he won the title at Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La. He entered the Delta race week Wednesday night with 56 wins at the meet, 23 more than second-leading rider Diego Saenz.
