Tight Britches extends winning streak to nine
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Tight Britches is starting to compile a serious win streak. She made it nine in a row Thursday night, when she defeated male rivals in the third race at Lone Star Park. Tight Britches won the optional $7,500 claimer by 1 1/4 lengths over favorite Mr. Fuzzybottom, while zipping five furlongs in the slop in 56.99 seconds. She was one of four winners on the nine-race card for the team of trainer Karl Broberg and jockey Junior Chacaltana, who top their respective standings at Lone Star.
Broberg, who trains Tight Britches for James C. Cameron, was delighted with the win. The race was a rare offering at five furlongs on the main track, a distance he said suits Tight Britches, a 6-year-old by Lucky Lionel. Tight Britches ($5.20) was prominent throughout, and in the stretch held off Mr. Fuzzybottom.
“She’s so cool,” Broberg said. “What can you say? Nine wins in a row for her now. She beat the boys. The only reason she wound up in that race is because I juggled some entries around. I just didn’t want to not have one in there, and I thought she’d figure really good. But, it was a last-second decision to put her in there.”
Tight Britches began her win streak in a $5,000 claiming race at Will Rogers Downs in March 2013. In recent times, she has had success in the optional claiming ranks, at levels such as $18,000 and $20,000. Broberg hopes to keep the streak alive, and plans are to spot her conservatively while taking advantage of the fact that she ran for a $4,000 claiming price in January.
“I’m looking for the cheapest starter I can find for the girls,” he said.
Tight Britches was bred in Oklahoma by Diamond G Ranch. In her other career start against males, she was second in a maiden claiming race at Arapahoe Park in 2011.
