Thunder Dome ties track record in winning O.D. McDonald
Thunder Dome equaled a track record at The Downs at Albuquerque on Saturday night in the $70,000 O.D. McDonald, winning the seven-furlong race in 1:20.81. He finished 2 1/4 lengths clear of runner-up He’s Another Who.
Citizen Geller, who was shooting for his third straight win in the O.D. McDonald, finished seventh. The race was for 3-year-olds and up bred in New Mexico.
Thunder Dome ($9.40) was always prominent, pushing Forger through fractions of 22.24 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.13 for the half-mile on a track rated fast. Thunder Dome moved to the lead in the stretch and went on to tie the track record for the distance, according to the chart of the race issued by Equibase.
Alfredo Juarez Jr. was aboard the winner for trainer Dallas Barton.
Thunder Dome is a son of Dome who races for W.D. Carson Sr., M.H. Carson, and Leach Racing. He was winning his second stakes in the O.D. McDonald and overall has won six of 21 starts and earned $332,363.
