Three turf handicaps Wednesday at Happy Valley

Steve Andersen|Sep 19, 2016

Three turf handicaps – two at six furlongs and one at about a mile – are the leading races on an eight-race program at Happy Valley Racecourse in Hong Kong on Wednesday. Each of the races, the last three on the program, were oversubscribed with 12-horse fields and also-eligible lists.

The sixth race, the Cha Kwo Ling Handicap at six furlongs, will be the first start of the 2016-17 season for Super Turbo, a winner in Ireland in 2015. By Royal Applause, Super Turbo was transferred to Hong Kong last spring and had one win in two starts in the summer, a six-furlong race at Happy Valley in July.

Super Turbo will carry 128 pounds, five fewer than highweight Happy Surveys, a 5-year-old Australian-bred gelding who was third in a six-furlong handicap at Happy Valley in June.

Apache Spirit, a minor stakes winner at Deauville in France in 2014, can win his third consecutive race in the seventh race, another division of the Cha Kwo Ling Handicap. Apache Spirit won two six-furlong handicaps within a week in June.

Apache Spirit, a 5-year-old gelding to be ridden by Zac Purton, has been assigned 123 pounds, 10 fewer than highweight Caga Force, a six-time winner who was winless in nine starts in Hong Kong in 2015-16.

In the eighth race, the Kwun Tong Handicap at about a mile, the Kentucky-bred Classic Emperor can build on his June win at Happy Valley, the 4-year-old gelding’s most recent start. A winner of 2 of 13 starts, Classic Emperor, by Medaglia d’Oro, has been assigned 126 pounds but will carry 124 pounds since jockey Ben So is a two-pound apprentice.

Classic Emperor’s rivals include Inventor, a winner of handicaps on turf at Happy Valley in May and June, and Super Flute and Little Island, who were second and third in a handicap on turf at Happy Valley in June.

First post time for the program is 7:15 a.m. Eastern. The sixth race has a scheduled post time of 9:45.
