Three stakes scheduled for Los Alamitos summer stand

Led by the Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes for female sprinters, Los Alamitos will host three stakes during its summer meeting, which runs from June 29 to July 15.
The three-week meeting will have a three-day opening week, followed by a five-day racing week that will include racing on Wednesday, July 4. The final week of the meeting will operate on a Thursday-through-Sunday basis, from July 12-15.
The $200,000 Great Lady M. Stakes will be run at 6 1/2 furlongs for fillies and mares on July 7. The race has a strong recent history. Finest City won the 2016 running and was named champion female sprinter after a win in that season’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Skye Diamonds won the 2017 Great Lady M. and was later fourth in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint.
The summer meeting will include the $100,000 Bertrando Stakes for California-bred milers on July 4 and the Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby on July 14. The $150,000 Los Alamitos Derby is run at 1 1/8 miles. The 2017 running was won by West Coast, who was later named champion 3-year-old male.
Bob Baffert trains West Coast, who was second in the $10 million Dubai World Cup on March 31. Last weekend, Baffert said he will consider the Los Alamitos Derby for Restoring Hope, who was third in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct last Saturday.
