Three recent claims look toughest

Chuck Dybdal|Feb 04, 2005

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Three recently claimed horses figure to be the top three in the feature on an early Super Bowl day card Sunday at Bay Meadows.

Smokette, Chic Domestique, and Carte Madera look tough in a $20,000 claimer for fillies and mares at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

Trainer R.L. Martin claimed Chic Domestique out of an eight-length victory at Golden Gate Fields on Jan. 21. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer claimed Carte Madera, the runner-up, from the same race. Each will make her first start since the claim.

has run once for trainer Cris Vienna since she was claimed Dec. 31 at Santa Anita.

Chic Domestique and Carte Madera each have three turf victories. The other nine runners entered in the field have a total of four grass wins among them.

is 2 for 5 over the turf here. In her last race, which was on the main track, she won after being dropped to the $12,500 claiming level.

Carte Madera won two straight starts before giving a dull performance against $25,000 claimers in the slop on Dec. 30. She seemed to snap back to life when dropped to $12,500.

has more speed than Chic Domestique and should be in position to get first run on that one.

Smokette makes her turf debut, and her breeding - she's from an Al Mamoon mare - indicates she should like the surface.

Asked to try a mile at Del Mar after winning her maiden in a sprint here last June, Smokette won after sitting close to the pace. The same style of running here could lead to a victory at what should be a decent payoff.

The chief upset possibility could be Gloriababy, who won her lone turf start here, sprinting on Oct. 14. She has not yet been asked to run two turns but seems capable of handling it.

Three jocks on suspension

Freddy Fong Jr., Chance Rollins, and Iggy Puglisi will not ride Wednesday through Friday because of suspensions stemming from riding infractions last Sunday at Golden Gate Fields. Fong already will have served the first two days of a five-day suspension.

Fong's mount, Candi's Court, was disqualified from second to third for lugging out in the stretch of the second race, bothering Festival of Fun.

Rollins got three days for interfering with Mirific in the third race.

Puglisi got three days for his ride on Bevridge in the sixth.
