Juvenile racing headlines the European scene on Saturday, with Newmarket hosting a pair of Group 1 sprints, the Cheveley Park and the Middle Park. Also carded is the Group 2 Royal Lodge over one mile, a race that regularly has produced Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf runners. Royal Fixation, general antepost favorite at just less than 2-1 as of Thursday, looks like the right filly for the Cheveley Park, the filly-restricted companion race to the Middle Park and, on paper, a stronger heat this year. Royal Fixation has started her career winning 2 of 3, her defeat the equal of her victories. From the first crop of sire Palace Pier, Royal Fixation debuted quietly at Thirsk Racecourse in mid-June, her six-furlong maiden win more solid than spectacular. A 14-1 shot about a month later in the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge at Newmarket, she found stride slightly too late to run down odds-on favorite Venetian Sun, who was saved by the wire and went on to capture the Group 1 Prix Morny. Royal Fixation came back Aug. 21 in the Group 2 Lowther at York, where another mighty late surge carried her to a one-length victory over America Queen. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! America Queen has plenty of talent herself, and while Royal Fixation made her third start in the Lowther, America Queen has her third outing Saturday. Her debut win, by 12 lengths at Haydock Park, sparkled brightly, and she put up a good fight against Royal Fixation. Trainer Aidan O’Brien runs two, True Love and Beautify, both with legitimate claims. Beautify failed to stay seven furlongs when defeated by her stablemate Precise in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud two weekends ago but still moved forward from a game two-length Group 2 score on June 28. Ten days earlier, True Love had defeated 22 foes in the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, but after jogging to an easy Group 2 win in July, she took a 1 1/2-length loss as the odds-on favorite in the Group 1 Phoenix on Aug. 9, turned away by pacesetting Powder Blue, whom she’d defeated by more than five lengths a few weeks earlier. Wise Approach’s status as the Middle Park’s 11-10 antepost favorite as of Thursday says as much about his competition as the colt himself. Trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin, Wise Approach has scored two wins from five starts, capturing his debut in late April and notching a listed-stakes win July 19 at Newbury. His most recent outing yielded a third in the Morny, where Wise Approach took the lead a furlong out, fading late to third behind Venetian Sun and Gstaad, both defeated as short favorites in their subsequent starts. Appleby in the Royal Lodge sends out Wild Desert, whose last-start defeat might be put down to soft going. Solid early favoritism here goes to Bow Echo, who has started his career with two wins and whom young trainer George Boughey calls the best horse who has come into his yard. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
