Three group stakes and a matchup of UAE Derby winners are the highlights on the second card of the 2022 Dubai World Cup Carnival on Friday at Meydan Racecourse. The highest-level racing on Friday’s seven-race card comes on turf with the Group 2, $180,000 Al Rashidiya over about 1 1/8 miles and the Group 2, $180,000 Al Fahidi Fort over about seven furlongs. The Group 3, $150,000 Dubawi Stakes is a 1,200-meter dirt sprint, a stepping-stone toward the Group 1 Golden Shaheen on the Dubai World Cup card in March. The Al Rashidiya offers a path toward the Group 1 Dubai Turf, another World Cup Night race, and drew 11 entrants including 9-year-old warrior Lord Glitters, third behind the great Almond Eye in the 2019 Dubai Turf. Lord Glitters shipped from trainer David O’Meara’s stables in England for the 2019 Dubai Turf but wintered in Dubai last season, as he is doing again this year. Lord Glitters won the Singspiel Stakes over this 1,800-meter distance in his first Meydan start of 2021, concluding his local campaign with a sixth in the Dubai Turf. The French-bred gelding comes off a rousing success over good competition Nov. 21 in the Group 3 Bahrain International Trophy Stakes and will be ridden Friday by his longtime partner Daniel Tudhope. :: Want the best bonus in racing? Code: WINNING Godolphin has five of the 11 entrants – three for trainer Charlie Appleby, two for trainer Saeed bin Suroor – with Art Du Val at 111 the highest-rated among them. Lord Glitters twice defeated Art du Val during the 2021 Carnival and 4-year-olds Highland Fleet and Royal Avenue, both trained by Appleby, are the ones with some upside. Naval Crown, trained by Appleby for Godolphin, looks like the Al Fahidi Fort favorite. He won a listed race last winter over the Meydan turf before going on to finish fourth in the 2000 Guineas and second in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes, a seven-furlong contest at Royal Ascot. Naval Crown has been rested since July and is very likely to come back running. The Dubawi Stakes marks the Dubai debut of Freedom Fighter, who was second to Concert Tour in the San Vicente Stakes and fourth in the Gotham last year while trained in America by Bob Baffert. He races Friday for Bhupat Seemar. Trainer Doug Watson has two live chances with Al Tariq and Canvassed. The Friday nightcap, a conditions race over about 1 1/4 miles on dirt, drew 2019 UAE Derby winner Plus Que Parfait and, more prominently, Rebel’s Romance, who won the 2021 UAE Derby by 5 1/2 lengths. There was speculation Rebel’s Romance would ship for a start in the Kentucky Derby, but he instead went into hibernation, only now returning to the races, surely with the World Cup itself on connections’ radar.
