Three European runners shipping for Arlington stakes

Three European horses, including two trained by Aidan O’Brien, are shipping to Arlington Park for the trio of Grade 1 turf races on Aug. 14.
O’Brien is sending Armory for the $600,000 Mister D. and Santa Barbara for the $400,000 Beverly D. Stakes. Space Traveller, who ships from England, will start in the Mister D.
The Mister D. is the race formerly known as the Arlington Million, which underwent a purse cut and a name change for 2021. Names aside, this is expected to be the last year these races are run. Churchill Downs Inc., Arlington’s parent company, is in the process of selling the property and didn’t apply for 2022 racing dates. The Million, the first seven-figure race in the world, dates to 1981, the inaugural edition captured by the great gelding John Henry.

Armory never has won a Group 1 race and exits a fourth-place finish in the York Stakes on July 24. Three-year-old Santa Barbara brings the best credentials of the O’Brien-trained pair, having been second to the high-level 4-year-old Thundering Nights in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes in Ireland before sweeping to victory last out in the Belmont Oaks Invitational. Euro Charline in 2014 is the only 3-year-old winner of the Beverly D. Ryan Moore is scheduled to ride all three runners.
Space Traveller, who was eighth in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Mile, never has raced beyond 1 1/8 miles, and whose lone 2021 win came in a listed race, will be a longshot in the Mister D., which will have Domestic Spending as a favorite. Daniel Tudhope, who rode Mondialiste to a Million win in 2016, has the mount for trainer Richard Fahey.
