Three champions compete in All American Derby trials
The three champion 2-year-old Quarter Horses of 2013 are among 96 horses running in 12 time trials on Saturday for the $1,920,887 All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs.
The horses with the 10 fastest times, regardless of finishing positions, will qualify for the 440-yard final on Aug. 31. All 12 races at Ruidoso Downs on Saturday are time trials.
Handsome Jack Flash, the winner of the 2013 All American Futurity and the champion 2-year-old gelding and overall champion 2-year-old of 2013, starts in the third trial. The third race field includes Wagon Tails, who was third in the All American Futurity last year.
Kates Dynasty, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2013, is a standout in the ninth division. Five Bar Cartel, the champion 2-year-old colt of 2013, starts in the fourth trial.
There are stakes winners in 11 of the 12 trials. Other notable runners through the day are Turbulent Times, the winner of the 2013 Golden State Million Futurity, in the first race; Rock You, who won the Rainbow Derby last month, in the sixth race; Viva Mi Corazon, the winner of the Los Alamitos Winter Derby in February in the 10th race; and the 2014 debut of Ms First Prize Rose, the winner of the 2013 Rainbow Futurity, in the 11th race.
