In the last few weeks, Thought Process, a two-time stakes winner in 2024, has been scratched from the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita and considered for stakes at Churchill Downs and Penn National later this month. Instead of starting in those races, Thought Process will be heavily favored to win her first start of 2025 in an allowance race for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Saturday. Trainer Phil D’Amato considers the allowance race as a prep for the Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes at Del Mar, a $200,000 race at a mile on turf for 3-year-old fillies on July 19. :: Playing Santa Anita? Owned by the partnership of Madaket Stable, the family of the late Brereton Jones and the Little Red Feather Racing syndicate, Thought Process has not raced since she finished ninth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar last November. Earlier in 2024, Thought Process won the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf and the Grade 3 Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita. In Saturday’s allowance, Thought Process is part of a field of five that includes Schilified, who was fifth in two Grade 3 races earlier this spring for trainer Paddy Gallagher – the Senorita Stakes on the hillside turf course on April 27, and the Honeymoon Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf on May 18. Last summer, the D’Amato-trained Iscreamusecream won the San Clemente and Del Mar Oaks as part of a four-race winning streak at the start of her career. She later finished fourth of seven as the 3-2 favorite in the Grade 2 Rodeo Drive Stakes against older fillies and mares at Santa Anita last October in her final start of the year and her only defeat. Iscreamuscream has had four workouts since mid-May and is expected to have her first start of 2025 at the Del Mar summer meeting, D’Amato said. The Del Mar summer meeting begins on July 18. Through Thursday, D’Amato led all trainers with 22 wins at the Santa Anita spring meeting, six more than John Sadler. The season ends on Sunday before the Los Alamitos summer meeting begins on June 20. From Friday through Sunday at Santa Anita, D’Amato has 21 horses entered in 13 races, with multiple entries in six races. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
