SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Jockey Luis Rivera Jr. showed up for work at trainer Kenny McPeek’s barn a little before 5:30 a.m. Saturday because, well, that’s what he’s done most of the summer. Never mind that he was at Saratoga Hospital until around 8 p.m. Friday getting his hip examined following a spill he was involved in during the races.  All X-rays were negative and, aside from a little hip pain, Rivera was ready to go. For his first mount of the morning, Rivera climbed aboard none other than 2024 Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna for her final workout before next Saturday’s Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes.  “I came here to work because it’s my job, I didn’t know it was her,” Rivera said. “Then I heard Francisco [Serrano, assistant to McPeek] say ‘you’re working Thorpedo Anna, you sure you want to get on her?’ I said ‘I’m here already, let’s do it.’ “  Rivera guided  Thorpedo Anna through a half-mile work in 48.19 seconds, with a final quarter of 23.75 seconds over the Oklahoma training track. She went out five furlongs in 1:00.92 and six furlongs in 1:14.33. Visually, it was her most impressive of four works she’s had since coming to Saratoga last month.  :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Rivera concurred. “I’ve been working her for a while already and today’s work was really, really good, she was traveling really well,” Rivera said. “I don’t know how to explain it, she was so comfortable traveling and she went in hand. I just made her switch leads at the top of the stretch - I smooched to her - and when she switched leads I put her on the bit again and that’s it. That was the only time I asked her to run and she was traveling good the whole way.”  Serrano, overseeing the work for McPeek who was at a horse sale in France, said he was pleased with what he saw Saturday morning.  “It was a beautiful work, we were very happy with her, she just cruised right along,” Serrano said. “We weren’t looking for company, just a nice easy half and that’s what she did today. Luis was very happy with her and she cooled out fine. We’re very excited, looking forward to it.”  Thorpedo Anna is one of six older females expected to be entered Sunday in the Personal Ensign, which will award the winner a fees-paid berth into the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 1.  Also expected to enter the Personal Ensign are Raging Sea and Randomized for trainer Chad Brown; Leslie’s Rose and Dazzling Move, the one-two finishers in the Grade 2 Shuvee, and Dorth Vader, who won the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps here in June but who was fourth to Randomized in the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher at Monmouth Park in July.  Dazzling Move worked a half-mile in 47.21 seconds Saturday morning over the main track. That was the fastest of 134 moves at the distance on Saturday.  Pletcher older male quartet work  Trainer Todd Pletcher’s quartet of older dirt male graded stakes winners put in strong workouts on Saturday morning at Saratoga, but next starts are confirmed for only two of them.  Mindframe and Antiquarian, both on target for the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup on Aug. 31, worked five furlongs together in 1:00.64 according to Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch, getting their final three furlongs in 36.65 seconds.  “I thought they went super,” Pletcher said.  Mindframe is undefeated in three starts this year, having won the Grade 1 Stephen Foster and Grade 1 Churchill Downs in his last two starts. Antiquarian is coming off a head defeat to Phileas Fogg in the Grade 2 Suburban here on July 4.  Pletcher had put blinkers on Antiquarian for his workout last weekend, but did not use them on Saturday.  “I haven’t made up my mind for sure, but I’m leaning towards not making an equipment change,” Pletcher said.  A short time earlier, Fierceness and Locked worked a half-mile together in 47.66 seconds, getting their final quarter in 23.38 seconds despite having to go around an Ilkay Kantarmaci-trained worker who was going significantly slower. Locked and Fierceness galloped out five furlongs in 1:00.12 and six furlongs in 1:12.98.  Pletcher said he has not yet decided what race might be next for Locked and Fierceness, but said he has not ruled out sending one or both to Del Mar for the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 30. Locked shares common ownership with the 3-year-old Journalism, who is possible for that race as well. Fierceness is coming off a fifth-place finish in the Whitney.  Meanwhile, Sierra Leone, winner of the Grade 1 Whitney, worked a half-mile in 48.97 seconds Saturday morning in company with Chancer McPatrick, the multiple Grade 1-winning 2-year-old of 2024 who is pointing to the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens here next Saturday.  Trainer Chad Brown said Sierra Leone is possible, though not definite, to run in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
