ARCADIA, Calif. – The retirement party for the stakes-winning mare Mrs. Astor is on hold. Trainer Jonathan Thomas said on Wednesday that Mrs. Astor is scheduled to start in the Grade 3 Santa Ana Stakes for fillies and mares on March 15 and is a candidate for the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes on May 25. “We’ll look at the Santa Ana,” he said. “There is talk about not retiring her and circling the Gamely and see how we can get to that. She’s doing very well. We’re talking about it.” Owned by George Strawbridge Jr.’s Augustin Stable, Mrs. Astor won the $100,000 Astra Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/2 miles on turf by a nose at Santa Anita on Jan. 19, her sixth stakes win in eight starts since November 2024. Following that race, Thomas mentioned Mrs. Astor could be sent to Kentucky to be bred. Mrs. Astor, a 6-year-old mare by Lookin at Lucky, has won three Grade 3 stakes, including the last two runnings of the Red Carpet Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 3/8 miles on turf at Del Mar. :: Santa Anita Classic Meet! The $300,000 Gamely Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf is California’s leading race for the division in the first half of the year. “She has no Grade 1 black type,” Astor said. “I think the best spot for that would be the Gamely, if we were to try it.” The Thomas-trained Hiding in Honduras became the latest two-time winner of the current winter-spring meeting with a win in an allowance race at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Sunday. Hiding in Honduras won the Grade 2 Mathis Mile for 3-year-olds on turf on Dec. 28. Thomas considered starting Hiding in Honduras in Saturday’s Grade 3 Thunder Road Stakes at a mile on turf but opted for the allowance at a slightly longer distance. “I think we made the right call,” Thomas said. “The Thunder Road would have been too sharp for him. The extra eighth let him play to his strength, which is more stamina than turn of foot.” Thomas said the Grade 3 Kentucky Cup Classic, a $300,000 race at 1 1/8 miles on the synthetic track at Turfway Park on March 21, is an option for Hiding in Honduras. “We could breeze him a time or two and see how he handles it,” Thomas said. Santa Anita has a synthetic surface on its infield training track. Hiding in Honduras, a 4-year-old gelding by Dialed In, worked once on the all-weather track at Turfway Park in September 2024, long before his career began last October with a win by 7 3/4 lengths in a maiden race on the synthetic track at Presque Isle Downs in Pennsylvania. Owned by Robert LaPenta, Hiding in Honduras has won 3 of 4 starts. This weekend, Thomas has Twirling Point and Truly Quality entered in Saturday’s Grade 3 San Marcos Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf. Truly Quality may be withdrawn in favor of the Grade 3 San Luis Rey Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on turf on March 21. “I’ll probably just be patient and wait for the” San Luis Rey Stakes, Thomas said. Sharons Beach is entered in Sunday’s $500,000 Sunland Park Derby in New Mexico, but he will start instead in a maiden race at Santa Anita on Monday, Thomas said. Sharons Beach finished second in maiden race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on Jan. 23 in his first start since August. Thomas said Sharons Beach is better suited to Monday’s race at a mile. “I think he has the talent, but he doesn’t have the seasoning” to start in the Sunland Park Derby, Thomas said. “It would be unfair to put him that situation.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
