OPELOUSAS, La. – Thiscatcanjam emerged in good order from her splashy stakes debut in last Saturday’s Acadiana Stakes, and her connections are eyeing Louisiana Legends Night on July 4 for her next start. The 3-year-old daughter of Big Top Cat ran her career record to three wins from four starts by making short work of eight other Louisiana-bred fillies in the seven-furlong Acadiana, kicking clear by 3 1/2 lengths. “We were very happy with the effort,” said trainer Alan Klanfer. “We are looking at the 3-year-old filly race on the grass [the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Soiree Stakes] Legends Night. I’m not sure how she will handle the turf or two turns. She’s kind of a stocky filly, but you never know until you try.” Addressing the possibility of Thiscatcanjam trying older company in the 5 1/2-furlong Louisiana Legends Mademoiselle, Klanfer said she does well at shorter distances, but the competition is strong. “I think she is more of a sprinter, but the older filly and mare sprint division is awfully tough right now,” Klanfer said. “We want to keep her with her own age group for the time being.” Klanfer said the addition of blinkers to Thiscatcanjam’s equipment has helped take her game to the next level. “She was awfully green in her first two races,” he said. “Even though she broke her maiden in her first start, she was immature. In her second race, it cost her second money after she ducked in and was disqualified. We added the blinkers, and she is more relaxed. She rated nicely off a 22-and-change opening quarter in that allowance win, and even though she was on the lead Saturday, she went 23 and 2. [Rider Courtney Hernandez] did a good job with her.” Hernandez picked up her first stakes score in the Acadiana. She is the younger sister of leading rider Colby Hernandez and Brian Hernandez Jr., who rides on the Kentucky circuit. Saturday was a huge day for the Hernandez brood. In addition to Courtney Hernandez’s big victory, Colby Hernandez won the $100,000 Evangeline Mile aboard Mystery Train, part of a three-win evening. In the Acadiana, it was an all-Hernandez exacta, as Colby finished second aboard Persuade Me Lady. Earlier Saturday, oldest brother Brian Hernandez also had a big day, booting home three winners at Churchill Downs. Vicar’s in Trouble Horse of the Year Last Saturday, Vicar’s in Trouble was named the 2014 Louisiana-bred Horse of the Year by the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association. As a 3-year-old last year, the son of Into Mischief, out of Vibrant, by Vicar, won the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby and the Grade 2 Super Derby. He was bred by Spendthrift Farm. Spendthrift representative Mark Toothaker accepted the award following the night’s 10th race. “We’ve become big fans of the Louisiana program,” Toothaker said. “It’s a great way to get some of our young stallions off to fantastic starts.”
