Del Mar

They'll have to catch Medaglia Gold to beat her in Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf

Steve Andersen|Sep 02, 2017

DEL MAR, Calif. – Medaglia Gold thrived in her turf debut in a one-mile maiden race for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar on July 29. She led throughout to win by 3 1/4 lengths.

“Going long, she ran to her works,” trainer Clifford Sise said.

Sise has held Medaglia Gold in high regard since the start of her career in May and is hopeful she can win her stakes debut in Monday’s $100,000 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf at a mile.

One thing is clear: Medaglia Gold will be on the lead.

“If someone wants to go with her, it’s suicidal,” Sise said. “She’s fast.”

The Juvenile Fillies Turf drew 15 entrants, including five maidens. A maximum of 14 will start.

KEY CONTENDERS

Medaglia Gold, by Medaglia d’Oro

Beyers: 61-40-16.

◗ Owned by breeders Larry and Marianne Williams, Medaglia Gold was sixth and seventh in sprints on dirt at Santa Anita in May and June.

“I thought she’d win by five lengths the first time I ran her,” Sise said. “The next time, I took her back, and she ran better.”

◗ In her maiden-race win on turf, Medaglia Gold led by as many as five lengths in early stretch under Edwin Maldonado, who has the mount Monday.

Multiplayer, by Giant’s Causeway

Beyer: 55

◗ Multiplayer won her only start, a maiden race at a mile on turf here Aug. 13. She closed on the inside to win by a neck under Tyler Baze.

“She came out of her race in good shape,” trainer Tim Yakteen said. “She was very brave in her debut, coming up the inside. Tyler gave her a good ride.”

Terra’s Angel, by Drosselmeyer

Beyers: 59-60

◗ Terra’s Angel is the only runner in the field with graded stakes experience, having finished third at 56-1 in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt here Aug. 5.

◗ Terra’s Angel was not seriously considered for Saturday’s Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante on dirt because of supplemental, entry, and starting fees totaling $14,500, trainer Dallas Keen said. Entry and starting fess for the Juvenile Fillies Turf are $1,500.

◗ This will be the turf debut for Terra’s Angel, who will race with blinkers for the first time.

“She worked well on grass both times we’ve worked her,” Keen said. “We’ve put blinkers on her and, it’s settled her down.”
