Texas Red to resume training May 1

ARCADIA, Calif. -- Texas Red, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November, will resume full training on May 1 after an interrupted campaign earlier this year caused of persistent foot problems.
In recent weeks, Texas Red has trained several times a week with Keith Desormeaux at Santa Anita. Desormeaux said that Texas Red is no longer plagued by foot issues, and will have a more active training schedule in a few weeks.
“We’ll pick up his schedule on May 1,” Desormeaux said. “I’m ready to go now.”
Texas Red has started once this year, finishing second in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs at Santa Anita on Feb. 1. He was later turned out for several weeks at a Northern California farm to recover from an abscess in a foot. After resuming training in early March, Desormeaux abandoned plans to have Texas Red ready for the Triple Crown.
Desormeaux said he does not have any race goals for Texas Red.
“There are plenty of big races down the line,” he said.
Texas Red has won 2 of 6 starts and earned $1,232,300 for a partnership that includes Erich Brehm, Wayne Detmar, Lee Michaels and Desormeaux.
