Texas Red gets first winner as stallion

Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Texas Red recorded his first winner as a sire when My Girl Red won her debut by 4 1/4 lengths on Sunday at Santa Anita.
My Girl Red, who is out of the stakes-placed Fusaichi Pegasus mare Morakami, is trained by Keith Desormeaux, who also conditioned her sire. She races as a homebred for Erich Brehm, who campaigned Texas Red in partnership and who has strongly supported the young stallion in his second career. Brehm purchased Morakami for $21,000 out of the 2017 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale in order to breed her to Texas Red in his first season at Crestwood Farm in Lexington, Ky.
Texas Red, by Afleet Alex, was a $17,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Brehm and eventually raced for a partnership including Brehm, Desormeaux, Wayne Detmar, Lee Michaels, and Gene Voss. He flashed ability by finishing third in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes behind American Pharoah and then won the 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile by 6 1/2 lengths at Santa Anita.
The following year, Texas Red won the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga, besting Frosted by a half-length. He also finished second in the Grade 2 San Vicente and second in the Grade 3 Dwyer.
