Texas Hall of Fame will induct five new members

Mary Rampellini|Jul 01, 2016
Promise Me Silver
Barbara D. Livingston Grade 3 winner Promise Me Silver will make her next start in the Valor Farm Stakes on July 9 at Lone Star Park.

The Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame has announced the names of the five individuals to be inducted during a gala Oct. 29 at Retama Park near San Antonio.

The new class is comprised of First Down Dash, Hugh Fitzsimons, Dr. Nat Kieffer, John T. L. Jones, and Jay Pumphrey.

Retama opens its Thoroughbred meet Sept. 2. It is currently conducting a meet for Quarter Horses.

Retired racehorses wanted

Lone Star Park will be the site of the second annual Roses to Ribbons Old Fashioned Horse Fair on July 9, an event designed to match horses getting ready to retire from racing with new owners. It is put on by the Texas Thoroughbred Association’s Paddock Foundation.

Owners or trainers with racehorses approaching retirement can bring those animals to the paddock to parade before potential buyers at 11 a.m. Central. The sale of any horse is private, negotiated between the parties. There will be a buyer education seminar at 10:30 a.m., also in the paddock area, while vendors selling tack, artwork, and other items will be out in full force.

It is recommended horses be registered in advance of the event, to promote available individuals to prospective buyers. For more information on procedures, contact the TTA at (512) 458-6133, or Tracy Sheffield at (512) 395-5314.

Fireworks at Lone Star

Lone Star Park has set a special post of 5 p.m. Central for Sunday’s card to accommodate a fireworks show following the races. The track also will race Monday, and the card that starts at 5 p.m. will be followed by a second fireworks program. The shows will be choreographed to music, according to Lone Star.

◗ Grade 3 winner Promise Me Silver remains on deck for the Valor Farm Stakes on July 9 at Lone Star, according to trainer Bret Calhoun. Calhoun said Supermason, winner of the opening-night Premier Stakes at Lone Star, is set to run on the same card, in the Assault Stakes.
