Texas Chrome, Indian Tiva win stakes
Texas Chrome won the third stakes race of his young career Monday at Zia Park, rolling home by four lengths in the $55,000 Governor’s Cup. Range Rider finished second, 1 3/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Cowboy Cool.
The Governor’s Cup was one of two stakes for 2-year-olds on the card. In the $55,000 Permian Basin for fillies, Indian Tiva became a stakes winner when she ran down Fleet Grey in late stretch.
Texas Chrome ($2.60) had one horse beat early in the six-furlong Governor's Cup as Concord Fast and Range Rider dueled through fractions of 23.61 for the opening quarter and 46.84 for the half-mile. Texas Chrome advanced on the turn, came four wide into the stretch, and went on to cover six furlongs on a track rated fast in 1:10.92.
Deshawn Parker was aboard Texas Chrome for owner Danny Keene and trainer Shea Stuart.
Stuart said Texas Chrome is a prospect for the $250,000 Springboard Mile at the horse’s home base of Remington Park. The race is Dec. 13. Before then, Stuart said, Texas Chrome would be considered for the $100,000 Clever Trevor on Nov. 6 at Remington.
Texas Chrome has now won four of five starts for career earnings of $179,562. His first stakes win came in the $111,000 colts and geldings division of the Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity in July at Lone Star Park. Texas Chrome then won the $100,000 Gold Rush Futurity in August at Arapahoe. He is a son of Grasshopper and he was bred in Texas by Craig Upham.
Indian Tiva ($10.40) trailed early then put in a big stretch run to catch pacesetter Fleet Grey for a 3 3/4-length win in the Permian Basin. She covered six furlongs in 1:11.13.
Elvin Gonzalez was aboard Indian Tiva, who was bred and is owned and trained by Barbara Brown. The New Mexico-bred daughter of the Indian Charlie stallion Shame On Charlie has now won two of five starts and $71,338.
