Texas Chrome draws rail, faces 10 in Oklahoma Derby

Mary Rampellini|Sep 22, 2016
Texas Chrome wins the Super Derby
Lou Hodges Jr./Hodges Photography Texas Chrome, winner of the Grade 3 Super Derby, will look to add to his big year in Sunday's Oklahoma Derby.

Texas Chrome will break from the rail in the 11-horse Oklahoma Derby on Sunday at Remington Park. He will be seeking his second straight Grade 3 win, following the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs.

Entries for the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby were taken Thursday. The 1 1/8-mile race is the richest of the meet and will be showcased on a card of 10 stakes. There will be a special first post of 3 p.m. Central.

Remington plans to offer an all-stakes pick four on races 9-12, and the bet will have a minimum guaranteed pool of $50,000. The races making up the sequence will be the $175,000 Governor’s Cup, the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks, the Oklahoma Derby, and the $50,000 Bob Barry Memorial (R12).

Texas Chrome will be seeking his fourth stakes win of the year when he runs at his home track of Remington. C.J. McMahon has the mount for Keene Thoroughbreds and trainer J.R. Caldwell.

The field, from the rail out with riders, is Texas Chrome, McMahon; Way Striking, Joe Talamo; Ready Dancer, John Velazquez; Inside Straight, Scott Stevens; Sticksstatelydude, Joel Rosario; Secret Passage, Florent Geroux; Fish Trappe Road, Rafael Bejarano; Solve, Geovanni Franco; Pass the Buck, Israel Ocampo; Ready Intaglio, Shane Laviolette; and Seeking Blame, Brian Hernandez Jr.

The Oklahoma Derby has a scheduled post of 7:40 p.m.

Family Tree headlines the Remington Park Oaks, a 1 1/16-mile race that drew nine fillies. Family Tree, who will break from post 9 under Bejarano, is the winner of the Grade 2 Indiana Oaks and Grade 3 Iowa Oaks.

Emmzy, who drew post 2 for the Remington Park Oaks, is more likely to run Saturday night at Churchill in the Dogwood Stakes, trainer Brad Cox told the track’s media officials, noting that a decision would be made later Thursday.

The forecast for Sunday is a high of 71 degrees and an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms, according to The Weather Channel.
