Texas announces 2002 dates

The Texas Racing Commission awarded race dates for 2002 during a meeting in Austin on Tuesday.

Lone Star Park near Dallas was awarded 70 days of Thoroughbred racing next year from April 4 to July 14, and 33 days of Quarter Horse racing from Oct. 4 to Nov. 30. Sam Houston Race Park in Houston was granted 84 days of Thoroughbred racing from Jan. 2 to March 30, and Nov. 1 to Dec. 8. The track was also awarded 44 days of Quarter Horse racing from June 28 to Sept. 8.

Retama Park near San Antonio will run a 51-day Thoroughbred meet from Aug. 2 to Oct. 26, and instead of the mixed meet it requested, was granted 31 days of Quarter Horse racing from April 19 to June 23. Manor Downs in Austin will run its inaugural 10-day Thoroughbred meet from May 11 to June 9 next year, with an 18-day Quarter Horse season to stretch from Feb. 16 to April 14.
